伊索(约前620年-前560年)，古希腊著名的哲学家、文学家，与克雷洛夫、拉·封丹和莱辛并称世界四大寓言家。
他曾可能是埃塞俄比亚人，后做过萨摩斯岛雅德蒙家的奴隶，并被转卖多次，但因知识渊博，聪颖过人，最后获得自由。
伊索环游世界，为人们讲述他的极富哲理的寓言故事，他后来被德尔菲人杀害。
公元前5世纪末，"伊索"这个名字已是古希腊人尽皆知的了，当时的古希腊寓言都归在他的名下，他创作的寓言深受古希腊人民的喜爱。现存的《伊索寓言》原名《埃索波斯寓言故事集成》，是后人根据拜占廷僧侣普拉努得斯搜集的寓言，以诗或散文的形式结集。以及人们陆续发现的古希腊寓言及古罗马寓言汇编而成的，却统归在伊索名下了。
